EFFICIENCY OF VARIOUS HERBICIDES FOR WEED CONTROL IN RICE: A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OVER T. AMAN AND BORO SEASONS IN BANGLADESH

Weed infestation is one of the most important constraints to rice production in Bangladesh that causes significant reduction in grain yield for all growing seasons. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ten herbicide treatments for weed control and improving productivity of rice which are practiced during both T. Aman and Boro seasons, 2024-25 at BINA (Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture) headquarters farm and Rangpur. The experiment was laid in a RCBD with three replications at two locations and sodic weed and chemical control treatments (Pretilachlor 50 EC, Indofit, 2,4 D amine Bispyribac sodium Penoxsulam Cyhalop) as well as their combination were tested against an untreated check of BINAdhan17 (T. Aman) and BINAdhan25 (Boro rice) during Aus Season. The results revealed that weed infestation was higher in the untreated control plot with weed density of 103.2 m ⁻ ² and 138.52 m ⁻² during T. Aman and Boro season respectively, which consequently caused significant yield loss. Among the herbicides Penoxsulam remained superior with weed control efficiencies of 80.81% in T. Aman and 83.52% in Boro seasons resulting in highest grain yield of 5.17 t ha ⁻ ¹ and 5.22 t ha ⁻ ¹, respectively. Indofit based and Bensulfuron methyl + Bispyribac sodium combination treatments also performed well with weed control efficiencies of more than 80%. The article verifies the importance of herbicide use in relation to rice productivity for controlling a wide range of weeds, and seasonal variability was found relative to treatment success. These results are significant in the context of integrated weed management options in rice production systems in Bangladesh.
